Sexual Violence in Aotearoa

  • More than 900,000 people (23% of adults) have experienced one or more incidents of sexual violence at some point during their lives. (NZ Crime and Victim Survey 2018)
  • Females made up 71% of the victims and suffered from 80% of sexual assault incidents. (NZ Crime and Victim Survey 2018)
  • 34% of women and 12% of men have experienced one or more incidents of sexual violence at some point during their lives. (NZ Crime and Victim Survey 2018)
  • 20% of girls and 9% of boys in New Zealand report unwanted sexual touching or being forced to do sexual things. (Youth 2000 survey 2012)
  • Māori students (18%) were more likely to report having experienced sexual abuse or coercion than their New Zealand European counterparts 12%. (Te Puni Kōkiri 2017)
  • There was a 21% increase in the number of sexual violence victimisations reported to the police between 2014/2015 and 2017/2018. The number of unique victims who reported victimisations each year also increased by 7%. However it is not currently possible to determine how much of this is a result of an increase in sexual violence experienced, or increased reporting to, and recording by, Police.   • As of 2019, 31% of reported victimisations resulted in a perpetrator being charged, 11% resulted in a conviction, and 6% had a prison sentence. Only 21% of victimisations with a charge outcome received that outcome with six months of reporting (Attrition and progression: reported Sexual Violence victimizations in the criminal justice system 2019)

Porn

  • One in four young people in New Zealand first saw porn by the age of 12. Three out of four have seen it by 17. (OFLC NZ Youth and Porn 2018)
  • 15% of NZ youth view porn at least monthly, weekly, or daily. The majority of these regular viewers started looking at porn monthly, weekly or daily by age 14. (OFLC NZ Youth and Porn 2018)
  • The majority of 14-year old girls have seen porn. Around 10 percent of girls view it regularly. (OFLC NZ Youth and Porn 2018)
  • 73% of regular viewers use porn as a learning tool and 1 in 5 recent viewers have tried doing something they saw in porn. (OFLC NZ Youth and Porn 2018)
  • Almost ¾ of recent porn viewers saw things that made them feel uncomfortable. (OFLC NZ Youth and Porn 2018)
